Ten years ago today (September 7, 2005) was the day I joined deviantArt at jmk1999’s suggestion. He saw my drawing of the Prince from the game Prince of Persia and told me about this site called deviantArt where people uploaded their art. I remember thinking the name was strange for an art site, but I joined anyway and uploaded my first deviation.
Looking at it now, I can’t help but laugh. I wasn’t very good at drawing and yet I wanted to draw my favorite character so badly that I took a gaming magazine, drew the hourglass and then used an official artwork image as a reference to draw the Prince. I didn’t even have a scanner back then but I wanted so badly to share my drawing with other Prince of Persia fans that I went and got it scanned at a store somewhere.
The funny part came a couple of Prince of Persia drawings later when jmk1999 told me that I should start drawing original poses from my head instead of looking at an image and drawing what I see. I followed his advice.
His hand is behind his back because I didn’t know how to draw hands. Even to this day, I can’t easily draw hands; it takes me a few tries to get them right.
I continued to draw even though I didn't think I was very good at it. I only saw visible improvement after I met Nadide and her art inspired me and made me want to try harder. She was so nice that she even drew an original character I was using at the time to write a RP story with a few other people. The designs are horrible and just posting this is embarrassing but here are my drawings of the same character before and after I met her:
The next big change came when I started wanting to draw FanArt for Bleach and Naruto. I didn’t have a graphics tablet back then, but I still tried with the mouse.
I knew this drawing was far from being perfect, but I still thought it was pretty good, good enough for me to dare submit it to one of the most popular Bleach groups. As it turns out, it wasn’t good enough and it ended up getting declined. I felt down for a bit after that, but finally getting a graphics tablet lifted my spirits and Ulquiorra became the subject of my first digital drawing.
I mostly drew in the anime style for a few months after that, until one day when I dared to try moving away from that style and I ended up drawing this:
I still wasn’t satisfied with my style and I realized that the best way to get better at drawing was to try to figure out how some people draww skin, clothes, hair, so I stared at this image of Cloud done by the amazing Negshin (who also happens to be one of my all-time deviantArt favorite artists and my biggest influence) and ended up painting this drawing of Ichigo:
I still have much to learn and I may not have many watchers, but those few I have are enough to keep me going. Thank you so much for your support!
Below are my first and latest deviations submitted to deviantArt. I hope this shows that anyone can improve. All you have to do is keep practicing. Never give up!
